Manaakitanga, in te reo Māori, means the process of showing generosity, respect and care for others. At our kura, the value of Manaakitange is about showing responsibility and mindfulness by doing what you know you should be doing, being a positive role model for others, and helping others out when they need help.

Aroha means love. It is about kindness, empathy, and care for ourselves and for others. It is important to remember the aroha towards ourselves, as this is often an element that can be forgotten about. If we are kind to ourselves, we are better able to be kind to others. If we are kind to others, we are better able to be kind to ourselves.

Kaitiakitanga means guardianship or stewardship. In our context, this means we accept our responsibility as guardians of our environment, both outdoors as well as in our learning spaces. Kaitiakitanga is an important value for us at Mākara Model School, as we are also an enviroschool. We care deeply about our environment, and feel very fortunate to be able to teach and learn in a place that affords us easy access to EOTC opportunities, as well as learning about conservation and environmental issues.

Ako is our value that represents learning. This value is about trying our very best in all aspects of our learning, and in all learning areas. It is also about having a growth mindset so that we can remain positive about our learning, including when we make mistakes. Mistakes, of course, are good opportunities for us to learn! So, we will also need to be resilient in our learning.

Rangatiratanga is our value of leadership. The term "rangatiratanga" literally means leadership. All tauira are able to show this value, from our New Entrants to our Year 8s. There are many opportunities to show leadership throughout the day, including being the classroom kaiawhina, showing others what to do by role modelling what to do, helping others without needing to be asked, and many others.

Auaha means to create, and so is our value of creativity. This applies to much more than the arts, however. As well as artistic creativity, auaha encompasses problem solving and the creative problem-solving that occurs in our learning across all subject areas. It is about being resourceful and thinking outside of the box to solve problems or find solutions.
