At Mākara Model School we are passionate about culturally sustaining practice and ensuring our kura is a safe, inclusive, and welcoming place for all tamariki and whānau. We are committed to honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi and providing students with rich opportunities to engage in cultural experiences.
All students take part in weekly kapa haka sessions with an experienced tutor. Since 2023, we have proudly participated in Whakanui Ahurea—the Wellington regional kapa haka showcase. This gives our tamariki the chance to celebrate their own performance while being inspired by other groups.
Our kaiako are also dedicated to deepening their knowledge. Two teachers attend Kura Ahurea, a programme led by Te Ātiawa, where they learn local pūrākau (stories). These pūrākau are then shared across the kura so that all teachers and students benefit from this learning.
We have a strong relationship with local iwi, Te Ātiawa, and meet with them once a term. These connections guide and support us in ensuring our practice reflects the stories and knowledge of mana whenua.
We celebrate important events such as Matariki and Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori. In 2025, for example, we hosted a community Matariki breakfast and held a week of activities to mark Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori.
We value strong partnerships with our Māori whānau. Our termly hui provide opportunities to listen, share, and understand whānau aspirations, helping us to continue strengthening our cultural practice.
