Enviroschool

We are an Enviroschool.   This means we are a part of a network of schools that are committed to the Enviroschools Kauapapa of creating a healthy, peaceful, sustainable world through learning and taking action together.

What is Enviroschools?

Enviroschools is a nationwide programme supported by the Toimata Foundation. We are one of the 153 ECE to Secondary schools in the Wellington Region, that meet once per term to learn and share ideas. Mākara Model School also has access to resources and facilitators from Wellington City Council that provide ākonga (students) with hands-on learning experiences.

We care deeply about protecting and caring for the environment.We show this by;

  • Committing to a long-term sustainability journey where ākonga connect with and explore their own environment, then have opportunities to plan, design, & take action for their local places in collaboration with their community.
  • Teaching sustainable practices (low waste lunches, school worm bins & compost, picking up rubbish)
  • Encouraging learning through the environment
  • Having a school Envirogroup/Green Team
  • Working closely with Capital Kiwi to learn about and protect the almost 200 Kiwi that live in our ‘backyard’
  • Predator trapping to protect native species (including Kiwi)
  • Looking after our local Tūnā (eels)
  • Caring for our school māra (garden), growing things we can eat and that attract insects
  • Planning and planting native bush habitats for our native animals.
  • Restoring the stream that runs along our school boundary.
  • Coast Clean ups.
